Gerbera (jur-ber-uh)
As sad as I am to say this, summer is over, and autumn is falling in as fast as the weather is changing in Vancouver. September is here; school’s starting, the sun is shying away, and the biggest change? Clearing out our wardrobes of summer clothes to make way for fall colours and trends. Similarly, gerberas are popular flowers that are timeless and so versatile they are appropriate for almost any occasion.
The most important concept to keep in mind is to stick to basics, which is why gerberas are perfect for September, the “Back to Basics” month. Offered in 8 different colours at GPF (see below), gerberas are the all-around flowers that are perfect for layering, just like the basic tee or tank. We even have germinis, a smaller, cuter size for those who prefer petite flowers and arrangements!
What is a gerbera?
Gerberas are the common daisy’s elegant cousin; they are slightly larger, stronger, and have a classy look. This popular flower is perfect for any gift (ie. Thank You, Get Well, Anniversary, etc.), a wedding, or simply a lovely arrangement for the living room. Gerberas are especially durable and long-lasting- they have a lifespan of around a week, and have strong petals that do not fall off easily.
Also, gerberas are not particularly fragrant, so it won’t affect those with allergies. For some people this may be a good thing, and others a disappointing factor (but personally, I never get close enough to the arrangement to smell them anyway).
*TIP*:
Although gerbera stems are much sturdier than daisy stems, they do weaken over time and snap easily. The secret to keeping them upright is to put them in plastic straws. (GPF does this for you if the flower is weaker to start with, but will leave them in their natural state if the stem is vertical enough).
