Designing window displays is fun. No seriously it’s like getting to design a tiny little event, create a tableau of anything you want! You construct this tiny little world of wonderment to showcase the shop to passers by, and hopefully entice them into buying some flowers. Here’s the thing though, due to the delicate nature of flowers the upkeep of the window is crucial in order to maintain the fabulous look of the original design. Nothing is worse than a dead dahlia or a crusty cymbidium sitting in your window. So we have come up with a system at the store, where 1 designer is in charge of the window for a 2 week period. You get to come up with a design of your choosing and implement it, but it also means that for those two weeks you have to make sure it stays looking as beautiful as it did on day one.
So when I knew it was my turn coming up I started to dream up some ideas. Amy encouraged us to let our window display really speak to who we are as designers. So with that in mind I set to work on something that had been kicking around in my head for a while. I mean the store is called Garden. Party. Flowers. and I do love me a good garden party. Being the girly girl I am I have been hosting tea parties since I was about 3. As the youngest in the family and the only girl I would set up my stuffed animals and drag anyone else who was game to my table (a big thanks goes out to my Uncle Bob who was always a good sport and sat through many a tea party along side my care bears).
Now that I have my very own big girl apartment complete with pretty tea pots for real tea, and cake plates for real cake, the props for my window display were sitting right there in my kitchen! I decided I was going to create a pretty girly girl garden tea party in our window! But who was going to attend this tea party you ask? Since my care bears have moved on to greener pastures, I decided to just put a bird on it! In case you have missed the hilarious new TV sensation Portlandia, there’s a whole skit about adorning everything with birds, as it seems to be quite the craze in giftware these days. But when I saw these darling little birdies at the floral supply I just couldn’t resist! They were the perfect accoutrements to my carnation cakes and garden style posies.
So my friends, when in doubt…put a bird on it!
